Quote of the day

“All you need in this life is ignorance and confidence, and then success is sure.”  Mark Twain
Being Brown is NOT a crime, unless you're in the state of Arizona.

An Ode to War and Peace
by Joe Frank
ALEX CHADWICK, host:
We end our Memorial Day program now with a poem, "An Ode to War and Peace," written and performed by independent radio producer Joe Frank.
JOE FRANK:
So here's to the snappy salute, to spit and polish, the clicking of booted heels, the singing of martial odes. Here's to the officers' club and the swaggering commandant, to the loving but abusive drill sergeant, to the constant flow of insult that is the philosopher's stone of survival. Here's to the young lieutenant fresh from the academy, to the troop ship, soldiers with their duffel bags slung over their shoulders, their cloth caps slouched and angled on their brows. And here's to weeping parents, sweethearts and children clutching at the skirts of their mothers, to final tearful embraces and brass bands playing.
Here's to the night before the battle, to the assault, the coursing landing craft, to going over the top, to the airborne troopers plunging from their droning seed pods, to the rubber dinghy landing at night. Here's to where the farm boy and the city dweller meet and are made equal. Here's to the arcing shell and magnesium dawn, to the clanking treads of armored personnel carriers, to bullets and howitzers, carbines and recoilless rifles, to mortars and anti-personnel bombs, to fragmentation grenades and tear gas canisters, to machine-gun emplacements and flamethrowers, to fasgene(ph) and mustard gas, to the serrated bayonet and the deadly rain of shrapnel.
Here's to minefields fraught with sudden fragmentation, to screaming sergeant death, commanding the rag-tag remnants of his courageous platoon. And here's to raising the flag on the shattered field of victory, to the prisoner of war camp, to the medevac chopper, the hospital ship, sacrosanct, yet sunk, to chaplains, to burial detail and body bags, to "Taps" and other songs. And here's to the brave pilots who in their cavalier ready rooms prepare to become the airborne messengers of death, to the dog-faced infantry who dedicate themselves to the earth as much as their own cause. Here's to words like courage, sacrifice, discipline, glory, maimed, dead.
Here's to war. I raise my glass to you and gaze into the roiling liquid of death's own intoxication. O, war, you have made the low elevated. You have created heroes, and history will be written by your winner. Peace is pallid next to you. Peace can skulk and shrink, a weakling, a coward's paradise. Peace, you lukewarm bowl of grandmother's mush, you washed-out stand-in for manly behavior. Peace walks through the marketplace offering second-hand bargains, peace, the shaver of points, the cut-rate merchant. Peace, you miserable converter of men into swine, you destroyer of valor, quicksand in which nations founder, the bleeding wound in the side of the great avenging angel. Peace, the apologist, the compromiser, the appeaser, the rust upon the edge of courage's great sword.
What is peace but an excuse, a reason for cowardice, a refusal to accept one's responsibilities? I spit on peace. I lift my leg on peace. I have my dog despoil the miserable garden of peace. There are no medals to peace, no honors, no marching bands, no great monuments to peace, no hymns sung, no great odes, no martial melodies, no parades to peace. There are no gigantic fireworks displays, no champagne corks popped to peace, no last cigarette smoked in its honor. There is no night before peace, no declaration of peace. The very absurdity of a nation declaring peace on another shocks the imagination. And who among us can say that he has heard of the spoils of peace? Is there such a thing as a peace hero? Who among us have gathered with his old cronies late at night, hoisted a glass and told peace stories? What valiant young man has been welcomed back from peace? What young boy has gazed longingly at his father, saying that he would willingly go to peace to save his country?

Greatest Songs

Pixies  "Where is my mind"
lyrics (condensed version):

Oh - stop
With your feet in the air and your head on the ground
Try this trick and spin it, yeah
Your head will collapse
But there's nothing in it
And you'll ask yourself
Where is my mind [3x]

Way out in the water
See it swimmin'

I was swimmin' in the Caribbean
Animals were hiding behind the rocks
Except the little fish
But they told me, he swears
Tryin' to talk to me, coy koi.
Where is my mind [3x]

With your feet in the air and your head on the ground
Oh
Try this trick and spin it, yeah
Oh    Oh

Glad I don't live in Texas anymore

Welcome to Texas!  Brains?  We don't need no stinking brains.
Here's a special tribute to the Texas Bored of Education from the late great George Carlin:
  1. I would never want to be a member of a group whose symbol was a guy nailed to two pieces of wood. [George Carlin, from the album "A Place For My Stuff"]
  2. We created god in our own image and likeness! [George Carlin]
  3. I credit that eight years of grammar school with nourishing me in a direction where I could trust myself and trust my instincts. They gave me the tools to reject my faith. They taught me to question and think for myself and to believe in my instincts to such an extent that I just said, 'This is a wonderful fairy tale they have going here, but it's not for me.' [George Carlin, in the _New York Times_ 20 August 1995, pg. 17. He attended Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx, but left during his sophomore year in 1952 and never went back to school. Before that he attended a Catholic grammar school, Corpus Christi, which he called an experimental school.]
  4. If churches want to play the game of politics, let them pay admission like everyone else[George Carlin, from the album "What Am I Doing In New Jersey?"]
  5. This is a lttle prayer dedicated to the separation of church and state. I guess if they are going to force those kids to pray in schools they might as well have a nice prayer like this:  Our Father who art in heaven, and to the republic for which it stands, thy kingdom come, one nation indivisible as in heaven, give us this day as we forgive those who so proudly we hail. Crown thy good into temptation but deliver us from the twilight's last gleaming. Amen and Awomen. [George Carlin, on Saturday Night Live]
  6. I'm completely in favor of the separation of Church and State. My idea is that these two institutions screw us up enough on their own, so both of them together is certain death.[George Carlin]
  7. Religion convinced the world that there's an invisible man in the sky who watches everything you do. And there's 10 things he doesn't want you to do or else you'll to to a burning place with a lake of fire until the end of eternity. But he loves you! ...And he needs money! He's all powerful, but he can't handle money! [George Carlin, fromalbum "You Are All Diseased"
  8. The only good thing ever to come out of religion was the music[George Carlin, Brain Droppings]
  9. I've begun worshipping the sun for a number of reasons. First of all, unlike some other gods I could mention, I can see the sun. It's there for me every day. And the things it brings me are quite apparent all the time: heat, light, food, a lovely day. There's no mystery, no one asks for money, I don't have to dress up, and there's no boring pageantry. And interestingly enough, I have found that the prayers I offer to the sun and the prayers I formerly offered to God are all answered at about the same 50-percent rate. [George Carlin, from "You Are All Diseased".]
  10. A man came up to me on the street and said I used to be messed up out of my mind on drugs but now I'm messed up out of my mind on Jeeesus Chriiist. [George Carlin]
  11. I have as much authority as the pope, I just don't have as many people who believe it.[George Carlin, Brain Droppings]
  12. Jesus was a cross dresser [George Carlin, Brain Droppings]
  13. I finally accepted Jesus. not as my personal savior, but as a man I intend to borrow money from. [George Carlin, Brain Droppings]
  14. Instead of school busing and prayer in schools, which are both controversial, why not a joint solution? Prayer in buses. Just drive these kids around all day and let them pray their fuckn' empty little heads off. [George Carlin, Brain Droppings]
  15. When it comes to BULLSHIT...BIG-TIME, MAJOR LEAGUE BULLSHIT... you have to stand IN AWE, IN AWE of the all time champion of false promises and exaggerated claims, religion.[George Carlin, from "You Are All Diseased".]
  16. Religion easily has the greatest bullshit story ever told. Think about it, religion has actually convinced people that there's an INVISIBLE MAN...LIVING IN THE SKY...who watches every thing you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a list of ten special things that he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish where he will send to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry for ever and ever 'til the end of time...but he loves you. [George Carlin, from "You Are All Diseased"]
  17. I want you to know, when it comes to believing in god- I really tried. I really really tried. I tried to believe that there is a god who created each one of us in his own image and likeness, loves us very much and keeps a close eye on things. I really tried to believe that, but I gotta tell you, the longer you live, the more you look around, the more you realize...something is FUCKED-UP. Something is WRONG here. War, disease, death, destruction, hunger, filth, poverty, torture, crime, corruption and the Ice Capades. Something is definitely wrong. This is NOT good work. If this is the best god can do, I am NOT impressed. Results like these do not belong on the resume of a supreme being. This is the kind of shit you'd expect from an office temp with a bad attitude. And just between you and me, in any decently run universe, this guy would have been out on his all-powerful-ass a long time ago. [George Carlin, from "You Are All Diseased".]
  18. Trillions and trillions of prayers every day asking and begging and pleading for favors. 'Do this' 'Gimme that' 'I want a new car' 'I want a better job'. And most of this praying takes place on Sunday. And I say fine, pray for anything you want. Pray for anything. But...what about the divine plan? Remember that? The divine plan. Long time ago god made a divine plan. Gave it a lot of thought. Decided it was a good plan. Put it into practice. And for billion and billions of years the divine plan has been doing just fine. Now you come along and pray for something. Well, suppose the thing you want isn't in god's divine plan. What do you want him to do? Change his plan? Just for you? Doesn't it seem a little arrogant? It's a divine plan. What's the use of being god if every run-down schmuck with a two dollar prayer book can come along and fuck up your plan? And here's something else, another problem you might have; suppose your prayers aren't answered. What do you say? 'Well it's god's will. God's will be done.' Fine, but if it gods will and he's going to do whatever he wants to anyway; why the fuck bother praying in the first place? Seems like a big waste of time to me. Couldn't you just skip the praying part and get right to his will? [George Carlin, from "You Are All Diseased".]
  19. You know who I pray to? Joe Pesci. Joe Pesci. Two reasons; first of all, I think he's a good actor. Ok. To me, that counts. Second; he looks like a guy who can get things done. Joe Pesci doesn't fuck around. Doesn't fuck around. In fact, Joe Pesci came through on a couple of things that god was having trouble with. For years I asked god to do something about my noisy neighbor with the barking dog. Joe Pesci straightened that cock-sucker out with one visit. [George Carlin, from "You Are All Diseased".]
  20. I noticed that of all the prayers I used to offer to god, and all the prayers that I now offer to Joe Pesci, are being answer at about the same 50% rate. Half the time I get what I want. Half the time I don't. Same as god 50/50. Same as the four leaf clover, the horse shoe, the rabbit's foot, and the wishing well. Same as the mojo man. Same as the voodoo lady who tells your fortune by squeezing the goat's testicles. It's all the same; 50/50. So just pick your superstitions, sit back, make a wish and enjoy yourself. And for those of you that look to the Bible for its literary qualities and moral lessons; I got a couple other stories I might like to recommend for you. You might enjoy The Three Little Pigs. That's a good one. It has a nice happy ending. Then there's Little Red Riding Hood. Although it does have that one x-rated part where the Big-Bad-Wolf actually eats the grandmother. Which I didn't care for, by the way. And finally, I've always drawn a great deal of moral comfort from Humpty Dumpty. The part I liked best: ...and all the king's horses, and all the king's men couldn't put Humpty together again. That's because there is no Humpty Dumpty, and there is no god. None. Not one. Never was. No god. [George Carlin, from "You Are All Diseased".]
  21. Religion is sort of like a lift in your shoes. If it makes you feel better, fine. Just don't ask me to wear your shoes. [George Carlin]

Finally Friday

  • Awards Day.  Count me in as "who cares".
  • Last day of school is here already, glad to be sad.  Have you ever seen so many "Shinning Stars"?  SpellCheck anyone? Those stars were shinning with glitter everywhere on the wall in the cafeteria. Yeah, I'll be the one singing: Nah nah nah,Nah!  Nah nah nah Nah! Hey, hey, Good bye! to those 5th graders.
  • Philanthropist, not "full-on rapist".  Yeah, I laugh easily.
  • Finally finished packing those boxes in the storage closet of my classroom, it was never-ending these last few weeks. Took things off the wall, threw out about 20 bags of trash.  Now the fun part is unpacking when we come back in a couple of months.  It will be like Christmas in July. Literally.
  • Ran 4 miles today in the 82 degree heat.  It was actually pleasant, not too humid.  Cramped up a bit at the end, that reminds me to bring some GU Gel or some energy gel for runs longer than 3 miles and drink more liquid before and during.  I'm in what's called the base-building phase, just run about 20-25 miles weekly at an easy pace. I was up to 21 miles at one point last month.

Almost Summertime...

  • It must be "Harass A Teacher Week" with all those teachers in the news lately.
  • 3 places I'm boycotting: Arizona, Starbucks and BP.
  • Betty White for the Supreme Court.
  • "The Art of Being Wise is knowing what to overlook."  William James
  • I'm actually learning to love the heat and humidity of Georgia, after 15 years of living here. I've always dreaded the summer months and its intense mugginess but recently I found that the heat actually warms up your muscles more thoroughly and makes you run efficiently. I'm still dealing with the sweating profusely issues. If I just keep on running, the wind will dry it all off eventually. One of these days I'm gonna try to run shirtless. Ran 3 miles today.  86 degrees. Hot.
  • I teach in my spare time.  Between the duties, paperwork, chores, meetings, grades, setting up, cleaning and now packing. Just like all the other teachers at my school.

Mad World

  • "You're Fired! And Have a Good Day!"  Talk about insensitivity and heartlessness.
  • People in charge. Fail. Clueless. What else is new?
  • Plumbers get paid much more than teachers, but in all honesty they have to deal with a lot more S**T than we do.  Bet they have more than 20 minutes for lunch though and they can go to the john whenever they feel like it.
  • On a completely different note, Sarah Palin AKA "The Toast of America's Back-up Sump-Pump" is the Worst Person in the World in tonight's Countdown with Keith Olbermann.
  • "Glenn Beck has Nazi Tourette", Lewis Black is on fire on MSNBC.

Biggest Race

New Flash:  Bret Michaels wins the Amazing Race.  Or is it the Celebrity Apprentice.  Maybe both.

One day, I hope someone will say to Donald Trump:
"Donnie, you're cheesy dude, just quit while you're ahead."

* I'm boycotting Arizona and the Zonies, as we used to call them when I lived in San Diego.  And although I love the city of Austin, I will never, ever again live in the state of Texas.  Not for any amount of money in the world. Years ago, I lived in Houston for one summer and a long year in Dallas in 1994-95. You live and learn is all I can say.

Thoughtful Thursday

  • Announcement heard today: "Students and staff, we're going down slowly. It's not your computer, it's the county." Sounds about right, and there's nothing you can do about it.
  • Kindergartner asked: "Where did everything come from?" Heck if I know.
  • We learned that we had the world's most boring speaker at the school assemblies today.
  • Women love gossips. Hearing, talking and spreading them. I'd rather daydream.
  • We survived 8 years of Bush, you too will survive Obama.
  • I started running again exactly a year ago.  The key for me is to maintain a balance and keeping it fun while motivating myself every day.  I also try not to take it too seriously like a lot of runners tend to do. If it ain't fun, make it so.  Or else, what's the point, right?
  • If it's not fun-change it.  If it's not funny-mock it.  If it's not working-make it.
  • Prayer=Glorified Begging.  50% is still your best chance when you pray.
  • Have a happy National Day of Reason:
Tom Flynn, executive director of the Council for Secular Humanism declared:
“A secular democracy should have no place for a National Day of Prayer proclaimed and conducted by government. The federal government is supposed to show no favor among religions, or between religion and irreligion, and surely a National Day of Prayer is contrary to that fundamental principle. The National Day of Reason is important for two reasons. First, it is a private grassroots initiative, not a government program. Second, the National Day of Reason is important because unlike prayer, reason works. Most of the great cultural and technological advances that make modern life what it is exist because human beings employed reason. Prayer has had a far less enviable track record.”
Ronald A. Lindsay, CFI’s president and CEO, added “Reason can unite both the religious and nonreligious. Indeed, it is only through the use of reason that we can find common ground and solve the problems that confront all of us. Prayer divides, not only the religious from the nonreligious, but as history has demonstrated, one religion from another.”

    Cinco De Mayo

    • Los Suns y Los Spurs.  San Antonio, although it doesn't really matter.
    • 8 weeks 'til the Peachtree Road Race, the world's largest 10K.
    • visited my old stomping ground in East Cobb last night, ate at Paradise Grille.
    • Better get started on training for these events:  300m low hurdles, Long Jump, and 100m hurdles.  I wonder if it's the high hurdles?  And maybe the 3000m Grand Prix (Atlanta Track Club's Track & Field Classic on June 22).
    • 12 more school days until Summer.  Or more like 9 days of teaching, no specials the last 3 days.

    The Heavy

Listening to "How You Like Me Now?" by The Heavy on my iPhone KCRW Eclectic24 Music Channel.  Other internet radio stations app I have are: SomaFM, RadioParadise, Last.FM and KCRW.  No, I don't want Pandora.

Ran The Jonquil City Jog 5K this morning in the light rain.  Afterwards while waiting for the traffic to clear I decided to drive over to the SilverComet and do another 3 miles.  Slow is better this time, it felt great to run easy at a 10:00 pace instead of pushing hard trying for a 7:00 mile earlier.  Also had on my MP3 player and Wrek-FM radio playing, that might have had something to do with it. So, total today: 6.6 miles, 60 minutes, 60 degrees rainy weather. It has been warm and sunny all week long and now the weekend is here and it's currently about 62 degrees and still raining.  The Jonquil Festival is washed out.

    * Manu Ginobili is simply the most complete NBA player that I have ever seen, and I've been playing and watching basketball for over 32 years.  There is a reason why he was the MVP of the last Olympics games when he led Argentina to their gold medal and he is still way under rated in the NBA.  All you hear about are the Kobe, the Lebron, the Wade, all are great athletes, but not a complete team player and not as reckless and fearless like Ginobili.

The books are never about what you think they are about. Survivor is really about our education system because I feel, more often than not, kids are sort of taught or trained to be the best possible cogs in some big corporate machine. They’re not really taught in an empowered way that they can start their own company so that they can create and run their own lives. They are sort of taught to be just good employees, to just fit in.Cite Arrow Chuck Palahniuk

    Educamation or somethin' like that

    • Smart Board is an oxymoron and I don't mean those Promethean Boards.
    • It's a miracle that I haven't slapped silly some of these obnoxious fifth graders in my 9 years of teaching.  Do they have facebook in prison?
    • Fact: This Cobb county puts the Con in Conservative.
    • Spoiler Alert: I believe Donald Trump just gave away the result of the winner of this season's "Celebrity Apprentice" by commenting on Bret Michaels and his latest bout with brain hemorraging:  "He's a great competitor and champion and I hope he will be fine," Trump told celebrity TV news show Entertainment Tonight.
    • Bill Maher is still the man.  Will post his latest New Rules later, of course it's right on and about the ridiculous defense budget and war spending that's responsible for our budget deficits and other problems.
    • If it's not fun-change it and make it so!

    Saturday morning run

"3 MCs and 1 DJ, We be gettin' down with no Delay.  Wicky, wicky, wicky, Wick"
Beastie Boys on my MP3 today.
Ran this morning at 8:30.  Three and a half marvelous miles on this trail parallel to the sidewalk by my house.  This is my highest weekly total: 21 miles. My long run was 6 miles on Wednesday. It was a sunny and pleasant morning, 56 degrees, just about perfect weather- a few degrees cooler would be ideal.  Traffic was not too bad yet.  Ran by Rev Coffee and saw they were setting up for the Rev Fest later on today.
This weekend these events are taking place around the metro ATL area:  Freaknik, Atlanta Dogwood Festival, Robotics Championship at the GA Dome, SweetWater 420 Festival, Renaissance Festival, Hawks playoff game, Braves home game, Bon Jovi concert, a dozen proms downtown and RevFest '10.  It will be one giant parking lot in a few hours.

    Prison Bound on my mind

    * Tiger Woods and Kate Gosselin were made for each other.  They should hook up.

    * One more reason why I hate golf:
It takes 2 billion gallons of water a day to irrigate all the golf courses in America.

    * Social Distortion's "Prison Bound" is on my mind today.  Details later.

Georgia Council for the Arts facing elimination

Georgia Council for the Arts facing elimination

    Posted using ShareThis

This is embarrassing.  Georgia will be the only state in the country without an arts council.
I was in the theater show business for 13 years including 6 in this state until 2000 when I went back to school to get certified to teach.  What am I teaching now?  Art!
Of course music and art teachers will be the first ones to get axed when they cut the budget. They already cut the elementary music teaching positions in Fulton County.  Isn't interesting that we can find money for 2 wars in foreign countries but can't afford to pay our school teachers.  I didn't hear many people complain about the military spending all these years. Bet you didn't know that 53 cents of every dollar you pay in tax go to the Defense Budget, that's right, 53% of our taxes are spent on the military. Be all you can be.
Maybe I should look into becoming a professional poker player.

    Makin' It Work

    • Embrace whatever life throws at you.
    • Don't make it MORE than what it is.
    • Use that sense of humor, and lose the attitude.
    • Be clear, be concise, and then listen actively.
    • Do your own job & keep yo' mouth shut while you're doing it.
    • Whatever happened to Feng Shui?
    • Saw a fourth grader reading "Chicken Soup for the Preteen Soul 2" at school.
    • I'm gonna check out Cormac McCarthy's "Blood Meridian" and Barbara Strauch's "The Secret Life of the Grown-Up Brain" at the Smyrna library this week.  Currently I'm reading "Generation A" by Douglas Coupland and Ha Jin's "A Good Fall".
    • Daydream Default Mode is the official technical term for my current state of being (as heard on NPR's Fresh Air with Terry Gross).
    • These events are taking place this Saturday in downtown Atlanta:  Dogwood Festival at Piedmont Park, FIRST Championships (Robotics Olympics) at the Georgia Dome, Braves baseball game at Turner Field, Hawks playoff basketball and Freaknik.
    • I'm avoiding all the traffic downtown and go to Rev Coffee for RevFest '10.
    • Long run today of 6 miles in 80 degree weather on the Silver Comet Trail. Along the way I smelled wisteria, BBQ grills, water in a creek, smoke from a fire, pungent perfume, freshly mowed grass, and automobile exhaust when the trail intersects the roads.
    • My MP3 player has mostly Putumayo World Music among others, but for some reason when I put it on random play, Beck, Radiohead, Depeche Mode and Beastie Boys songs get played more frequently than anything else?  Especially Beck.

    The BUTLER did it!

Now that West Virginia is done, I'm rooting for the Butler Bulldogs, the obvious underdog and much classier team than that over-rated classless Duke Blue Devils ACC powerhouse.
Butler did it yesterday, and Butler will do it again tomorrow night.  My prediction for the final score tomorrow night's NCAA Championship game: Butler 56- Duke 51.

    Everyone's a Comedian

By the way, the new streak began last Wednesday, March 24.  I had one day off with the stomach flu last Tuesday.  Now I'm on day #12 of running at least 2 miles a day.
Two miles today at the Marietta Civic Center track, 73 degrees this morning at 11 AM.  This is going to be one HOT summer in Georgia.

    Teabagger's Pledge

Came across this from my friend Sean in Oakland, Cali.  Funny as heck.

    Paling around with NutJobs

    * McCain/Palin AKA Main Pain are back together once again.  Oh Hell No.
Grandpa John and Grandma Sarah both looking genuinely forced and fake at some event in Arizona today.

    * "Mom!  Grandma Sarah's palin' around with nutjobs again!".
"You're fired!", says the quitter to the winners and doers of something useful for the country.  Oh, the irony of irony. By the way, that hopey changey thing is working out great.

    * All these complaints and whines about the government taking over and federal-controlled healthcare blah socialist blah blah the end of America blah blah blah coming from these defiant undignified politicians in DC.  Guess who you work for?  That's right, the government.  So, you ARE the problem you're talking about. If you want to help with a solution, please just quit and go work somewhere else.  There, problem solved.

*I got one word for the troubles with the economy, health care and education budgets: IRAQ

    New Goal

    *  If it's not fun, then make it so.
"There are really do-able goals in yoga and in life. Practice balance, stay relaxed within each challenging moment, or Andrea's favorite, if it's not fun- change it."
